If you have a website then you will most likely have figured out that the best way to get people to visit your site is to have people finding it through a Google search for which your website ranks number one. This isnt all that easy however because any search term that there are any number of genuine searches for is full of competition, even from people who dont offer that particular service, they just want the traffic so that they will click on one of the ads on their site pointing to someone else that offers the service. There is a lot of competition for any search term and so you have to know how to beat it.
So how exactly does one go about getting a website to the top of the Google results? Well, there is only a certain amount that we know for sure and the rest is more or less educated guess work. The developers of Googles algorithm constantly update it to try and avoid spammy sites that dont actually offer a service getting to the top. However from many years of trial and error and from a useful blog from the unofficial Google spokesperson Matt Cutts, we can make pretty accurate guesses and the good SEO companies can give results efficiently.

There are many on-page factors to consider when designing your pages to allow Google to know what to rank you for, however there are far too many to fit into one article and so a few are: page title, META tags, alt text behind images, repetition on keywords in the main page content etc.
The long term challenge is, as any webmaster should know, backlinks. Backlinks are links that point to your site. Every link has a certain amount of link juice and in essence, the more link juice you have pointing at your web pages, the higher they will rank in search engine results.
The amount of link juice that a link will have depends on how Google values the page the link is from. Google PR is a number from 0 to 10 that quite accurately indicates the value that Google places on a given page and how much a link from that page will be worth. The higher the PR, the more link juice a link from that page will carry.
